The Dilemma

in the world of shoes style+comfort= HOPELESS DREAM. With our new 'lifestyle change' has come the age of the workout video. I have done some really fun videos (read:easy) and some really hard videos (read:kicked my butt and is taking numbers). With this new age of workout videos has also come the age of wearing actual shoes. Every morning, I have a fight with my feet- they always win. That's why you'll see flip flops on my tootsies in the winter. My toes are free spirits not willing to be strapped down or closed in. I cannot wear flip flops working out, so I have been winning every morning! (Stay tuned for a story about the revolt of the feet...) Well, I have two pairs of sneakers suitable for working out. The super cute Nikes are the ones to wear doing errands (bonus- I have matching yoga pants). I only wear those ones when I want to look like I've just worked out. My beautiful Nikes make my feet look dainty and fit. Then there are the ugly step-sister Reeboks that are ultra comfy and ultra hideous. The Reeboks are a pair of shoes that I actually bought because they are comfortable. These shoes make my feet look like a fat lady trying her best to lose some weight... and thus the dilemma- look like I'm working out or actually work out?

p.s. you know I'm serious when I've chosen comfort over style.

I love this " only wear those ones when I want to look like I've just worked out"! I know what you mean though. I have the same fight with all my cute heels all the time. I love the way they look but they are so darn uncomfortable most of the time! *sigh* the plight of a woman :)

April Kennedy said...

If you even think of wearing the Reeboks around me.....I swear I will run away and pretend that I am not hearing you call my name!

JK....but when you wear them you probably look like you should be doing a Richard Simmons video! I love "Sweatin to the Oldies". Sorry I skipped out today...which was suppose to be my first day....he was hecka crazy and I needed to shower before 10:00 am.

Are you blogging about twilight. I have to take sleeping medicine. I can't believe it.

you know, I was just thinking last night I need to get some cute athletic shoes so it looks like I work out. haha!

what a dilemma!!

mills said...

haha I would say I'm with April, but you HAVE to keep working out, your my workout buddy and there's no way I'm going to show up if it's just me!

Left something for you at my place, come on over and see! :)

April Kennedy said...

WOULD YOU POST SOMETHING ALREADY! Let's see...you have twilight to report on...a wedding that I'm dying to hear how it went...and thanksgiving coming up...now there...there is some blogging material for you!

Jolene said...

I agree with you about comfort. I hate wearing high heels for more than 2 minutes so I wear comfortable shoes everyday.

Mrs. Jelly Belly said...

I'd wear whatever I have matching yoga pants for. :)

That is a real dilemma, fashion over function. :) Visiting you from SITS. Have a great Wednesday!

I can not wear uncomfortable shoes! Never!

Xazmin said...

I'm so with you with the flip flops in winter! I HATE wearing shoes - the second I am home, or in someone "familiar's" house, off come the shoes!

Anonymous said...

LOL See this is why I like working out at home, I can go bare feet and let my toes be free! Saying HI from SITS!! :)

BloggessJ said...

Uh oh...that is a real delima...For me it would depend upon the day.

MsTypo said...

I always go for comfort over cute except when it comes to high heels. With dressy shoes the more painful they are the cuter they are.

TuTu's Bliss said...

LOL you should come to Hawaii. Flip flops are always welcome and yoga on the beach is best with no shoes at all. Congrats on your feature!!

TheHurt said...

Hmm.. Athletic shoes? Comfort. High heels? I always seem to pick mine from the Agony Range.. :D

I could never EVER wear flip flops, I think they're the most uncomfortable things ever! I generally pick a cute pair of pumps for a normal day-to-day wear.. Which is why I cannot do beaches, because pumps+sand=not so much fun. :(

Luv Luv

Not a flip flop fan here neither.
Great post.

Ah the eternal conflict: Substance or Style. :) I'm glad you are winning over your toes.

April said...

For me...it's comfort all the way!

Happy SAIT day 2009.

I choose comfort over fashion 99% of the time. Most of my co-workers roll their eyes when they see my comfortable yet ugly shoes, but I laugh whne their toes hurt and I am fine.

Astrid in Bristling Acres said...

I'm jealous! You said you had matching yoga pants...none of my clothes match! LOL! I admit that I do workout 6 days a week (at home on the treadmill) and I wear my jogging shoes only for that and switch to my other ugly shoes. Why don't I have a cute pair of shoes. Oh right...'cuz they're not comfortable! (sigh. for my comfort wins out over looks every time!)
Happy SITS day!

Comfort or style - interesting dilemma indeed.

I also love my flip flops!

I love to have an outfit that 'looks' like I've worked out or like I'm heading to a workout.

I'm with ya there sista! I love to look like I'm "on my way" to the gym, when I'm really "on my way" to Starbucks!

Unknown said...

It sounds like the Nikes aren't UNcomfortable, just not as comfortable as the Reeboks. So, wear the Reeboks to actually work out and switch to the Nikes before and after the gym as you do errands so you'll look cute!
Happy SITS day!

Ryan and Katie said...

That's a tough one...I think I'd choose the cute ones!Happy SITS day!

I agree. Wear the comfortable shoes to work out and then change to the cute ones for your errands! No flip flops for me either. I can't wear flat shoes unless I'm working out. I'm so used to my heels that it hurts my feet to wear anything else! I'm sure that's going to be a bad thing in the future...

Anonymous said...

I have my "look like workout" and my "really for workout" shoes as well. Actually what I really want is shoes that will just do the working out for me - as I hate it.

Mercedes said...

I love flip flops. Hmm cut the toes out of the sneakers could that work? lol. You know you could wear your reeboks to work out then keep your cute nikes in your gym bag to change into. No one will ever know. That way it will make it look like you really need the gym bag that matches your outfit. Sweet I love finding reasons why I need to get another bag.

Sounds like we are a lot alike in the shoe department! I always wear flipflops, no matter how cold! I too have some cute pink nike shox that I wear working out, or when I want to look like I've worked out! LOL!!

LOL! Oh, you make me laugh! I love it....

I am a flip flop kinda gal myself!

Heather said...

Happy SITS day! I think I'd choose comfort as well. I've often wondered about the style vs. comfort thing myself. Especially shoes. Even a moderate heel after a couple hours of walking is torture!

Tiffany said...

That's funny - clothes that make you look like you just worked out. I should try that. Happy SITS day!

Brandy said...

I have the same dilema...my nikes are uber cute but my reeboks are really comfortable. Since I'm not working out (though I should be) I choose the nikes more often...and then regret it about 4 hours later.

Melissa Papaj Photography said...

I am so with you! I hate wearing shoes, but when I do they have to be stylish! I have three pairs of tennis shoes, but all of them are cute without comfort. I wish I could find a pair that are both cute and comfy!

Michelle said...

Yes, I just bought some super cute running shoes...they have purple swoops...is that what those little check marks are called?

Anyhow, I havent worn them out of the house though. I'm saving them for running. ANd well, truth be told, I havent actually ran in them either.

Karol said...

Too funny about your stylish shoes! If you're working out at home, go for comfort...at the gym..definitely look cute!

Have fun!

I love open toed (is that a word?) sandals. Fortunately for me I live in the south and can often go outside barefoot. I did try that the one time I visited Utah in the Winter (accidentally, I swear) No snow though, phew. Hope you're enjoying being the FB.

Connie said...

This is exactly why I wear workout clothes. I want people to *think* that I work out. It is all an illusion!

mommy4life said...

I am laughing because my ugly step-sister shoes are residing on my feet at this very moment!

Tanielle said...

You are too cute...I am with you on the flipflops, my feet love them. Happy SITS day!

I'm all about the comfort these days personally. I had enough years of "career" dressing!

What A Card said...

Ah yes, the joy of comfort shoes. Why are the comfort of shoes inversely related to how good they look?

Marrdy said...

If I were you I woudl stick with the super cute Nikes. Who wants to look like an old lady before their time?

Ronnica said...

Me and flip flops are best buds. I'd wear flip flops or high heels every day if I could.

I also totally have two seperate pairs of tennis shoes, just like yours...the pretty ones and the supportive, fat-looking ones!

Rachel Lundy said...

Happy SITS day to you! :)

Reeni said...

I have a pair of workout sneakers too, otherwise you won't catch me in sneaks. When I was going to the county fair with my Dad he wanted to know why wasn't I wearing my comfortable sneakers? Huh. As if.

Kendra said...

LOL I'm like Reenie...not happening. Happy SITS day!

I hate having to wear real shoes! Flops are the BEST!

I'd rather be comfortable than look comfortable any day!

I am all comfort all of the time. I done caught me a husband & don't really care what most others think, so comfort rules for me.

My poor husband!

Lauren said...

I know exactly what you mean. I personally enjoy just looking like I worked out, instead of actually working out.

Visiting from sits...I actually hate the way most sneakers are designed. I mean, seriously, what's with the colors & mesh!

Judah said...

happy sits day!! you know I was in the grocery store awhile back and passed all these women in their workout clothes. hair all nice and makeup on. My friend said, oh they didn't just work out, they just want to look like they did!! HA!!

Sorry about the dilemma, love your post about it though!! LOL

I vote comfort over style any day :D Otherwise I'll be cranky.

I'm almost positive that since having my two kids my feet decide which size they want to ACTUALLY be on a daily basis. I have sworn by a pair of New Balance I bought about a year ago and now they are squeezing in spots they shouldn't be. They are also now a distant cousin to your ugly Boks due to a spilt paint incident. Don't ask...it was u.g.l.y. Great post. Happy SITS day!

Hello from SITS!
I am all for looking cute in my sneakers and "workout" outfit. I just bought a new wram-up suit the other day. But I'll be honest, I haven't worked out in a very long time! OOPS.

hahaha! To work out or LOOK like you've worked out? I know what you mean about the step-sister shoes, though - some of those comfy puppies could make cankles out of broomsticks! And with the "sockless" look (read: nineties scrunchy socks are apparently out of style) there's no hiding anything.

Angie said...

I hear ya! I LOVE sandals and going barefoot. I did an exercise video in my bare feet once...the next day I thought maybe both feet had fallen off! The pain was the only thing that reassured me they were indeed still there! Comfort..all about the comfort now!

Christy said...

Comfort over style every time. I am on my feet all day every day (teacher) and have several pairs of nonathletic tennis shoes that I wear instead of heels. Cuz I ain't crazy.

I hope you are enjoying your SITS day.

Another funny post.

Oh boy ... I'm super guilty of choosing style over comfort and I suffer the consequences all day long ... but I have a "weird fixed smile" that goes along w/ those cutesy shoes and that makes all the difference!

Ahh, the age-old dilemma... comfort or beauty?

I've already told my 9 year old daughter, "Sometimes fashion comes before comfort." A concept MEN can never seem to grasp. If they had their way they'd wear the same underwear until it fell off the waistband.

But, anyway, very cute blog, cute name too! Happy SITS day to you!!

And, keep up the hard work. It will pay off in the end with a more beautiful YOU!

Veronica said...

I have shoes just like both of those! Good luck with the exercise! I keep jumping on and falling off the wagon.

blognut said...

I hear ya'. Comfy shoes are rarely cute shoes.

I love my yoga days because shoes are not required! But hate my treadmill days because I have to put on shoes and well, walk on the treadmill!

Kimberly @ Seriously Daisies said...

Loved this post, although my dilemma comes from choosing which shoes to wear out and about, like when I'm shopping, since I'm not one to workout much.

After many tears and sore feet, I now choose comfy shoes over cute shoes when I know I'll be walking lots.

Happy SITS day!!! :o)

Just Lisa said...

LOL! I love flip flops, but I can't work out in them. My Nikes are my favorite, but I have a pair of Converse that are super cute (and functional) too!

Happy SITS Day!

Becky @ Babes in Hairland said...

Happy SITS Day to ya! I'm right there with you on the flip flops. I hate shoes- so I really hate winter, so I feel your pain. I have a pair of shoes I've had for ages that were meant to be used to work out in. ... they've just turned into the tennies I wear whenever I go out in my yoga pants!

Jess :) said...

I totally agree. I hate wearing shoes, and flip flops normally end up on my feet just to be able to say I'm actually wearing shoes.

Happy SITS Day :)

KatBouska said...

Too bad we can't all be like Oprah and have set "sitting shoes" and walking shoes and everything in between. :)

One day I was shoe shopping with my husband and I saw a pair of Ralph Lauren tennis shoes that were on sale for $10. They were really plain and mostly ugly, but ten dollars? So I figured, what the heck, and tried them on. OH, the angels were singing... these were the softest, squishiest, most comfortable pair of shoes I'd ever placed on my feet. It was only after I'd been wearing them for a week that I realized they were MEN's shoes!

I'm not a fan of wearing shoe! Flip flops are my friend:0)
